Nicor Gas takes action to reduce methane emissions with purchase of responsibly sourced natural gas from ENGIE Energy Marketing NA
NAPERVILLE, IL. – Apr. 25, 2022 – Nicor Gas is continuing to take action to fulfill its commitment to reduce greenhouse and methane gas emissions with the purchase of responsibly sourced natural gas from ENGIE Energy Marketing NA, Inc., a subsidiary of global energy utility ENGIE S.A. with ambitions to be the leader in the transition towards a carbon-neutral economy.
Building on the progress that Nicor Gas has already made, the company is seeking to do business with organizations and suppliers that are committed to the same environmental goals, and supply responsibly sourced gas from well sites and facilities with emission levels below industry average.
This natural gas supply is certified by Project Canary’s TrustWell™ responsibly sourced gas (RSG) certification standard – a leading data, ratings and certification company for responsibility in the oil and gas industry – and will meet the estimated annual demand requirements of 48,000 customers in a cost-efficient manner.
“The purchase of this responsibly sourced natural gas from ENGIE Energy Marketing NA reflects our desire to move the market toward more sustainable options for homes and businesses across our service territory and is a credible and transparent method of driving continuous improvement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Wendell Dallas, president and CEO of Nicor Gas. “As the largest natural gas provider in Illinois, we are seeking opportunities to invest in low-methane natural gas that is procured, transported and delivered by companies that have the same sustainability goals and values.”
As part of its commitment and strategy for lowering methane emissions, in 2014, Southern Company Gas – Nicor Gas’ parent company – was one of eight founding members of ONE Future. The ONE Future Coalition is a group of more than 50 natural gas companies working together to reduce methane emissions across the natural gas value chain to 1% or less.
The Coalition is comprised of some of the largest natural gas Production, Gathering & Boosting, Processing, Transmission & Storage, and Distribution companies in the country and represents more than 20% of the U.S. natural gas value chain. ONE Future has surpassed its 1% goal in all four years it has reported. Nicor Gas’ distribution system and many of the interstate transportation pipelines that serve it participate in the ONE Future program.
“ENGIE is proud to work with Nicor Gas in embracing low-methane natural gas as an integral part of the energy transition,” said Ken Robinson, president of ENGIE Energy Marketing NA. “This transaction is representative of ENGIE’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to limit environmental impact of its activities.”
